Veterans of Kieffer commando (LtoR) Rene Rossey, Leon Gautier and Jean Morel attend a ceremony near a monument honoring their commando on June 5, 2014 in Ouistreham, Normandy, a day ahead of the start of D-Day commemorations. The D-Day ceremonies mark the 70th anniversary of the launching of ‘Operation Overlord’, a vast military operation by Allied forces in Normandy, which turned the tide of World War II, eventually leading to the liberation of occupied France and the end of the war against Nazi Germany. Kieffer is a French navy officer who created and guided the first “liberated” French marine commandos who landed in June 1944 near Ouistreham. AFP PHOTO / LUDOVIC MARIN
