Peter Sutherland, the UN Secretary General’s special representative on international migration, bemoaned on June 26th the EU leaders’ failure to approve a plan to share a total of 60,000 would-be refugees, mainly from Syria and Eritrea, across the 28-nation bloc. More than 100,000 migrants have crossed the Mediterranean so far this year, most of them landing in Italy, Greece and Malta who say their EU partners should share more of the burden.
