“Over the past 5 years Jake and I have gone through our ups and downs like most couples, and spent time apart too. I moved to Australia and for a period of time I wasn’t sure if we’d ever be together again, but there was always something pulling me back to him. In the start of 2014 I was diagnosed with MS, Multiple Sclerosis, which led me to move back home to California. The only person I could think about and wanted to be with during this time was Jake. This began a new chapter for us in our love story. Jake was not scared off by my diagnosis but instead told me he knew he had to be with me because he wanted to be the one to take care of me and knew he was the only one who could do that. For the past two years he has been my rock through all the ups and downs with my health. He has been my consistent source of love, strength, and encouragement. “Apparently Jason saw me on #SNAPCHAT. I had sent my friend Ricky a photo and Jason was looking over Ricky’s shoulder when he opened it. Jason pointed to me and said “Wait, who is that? Hook me up!” So of course Ricky ended up telling me about this friend of his, but at that time, I just I wasn’t ready to start dating again. Ricky continued to bring Jason up every time I saw him, but I kept telling him I would let him know when I felt ready. Then one day, a light switched and I said to myself, life is short, meet the boy. Next thing I know, Ricky had made plans for us to go to a football game all together. When Ricky pointed out Jason walking towards us, my heart started going a mile a minute when I saw his baby blues for the first time…” ???? by @laurie_wilson_photography. “For the next three months I told everyone including our friends and family that we were going to London. I even printed out fake airline tickets. But when we arrived at the Boston airport and approached the gate for London, I looked at Janelle and said, “Babe, we’re not going to London”. She turned around with complete confusion and said what are you talking about? I told her I had planned a surprise trip for us and that we were actually going to Santorini. She hugged me tightly, and started to cry. She couldn’t believe it. At that point, she had no idea what else I’d been planning for her too….” ????! Photo by @studiophosart ???? “On October 29th, the 4 year anniversary of when we met, Chris suggested we go to Disneyland dressed as Cinderella and Prince Charming for Halloween. Cinderella has always been my favorite princess so I was beyond excited. That day, we were walking towards the castle when Chris says that it’s 11:11 and that we both needed to make a wish (a ritual we usually always partake in). I closed my eyes tightly, made my wish, and when I opened them, I saw Chris’ brother walking towards us with a real glass slipper on top of a purple pillow. Chris grabbed the pillow, looked at me, and said “I’m here to present Cinderella with her glass slipper…” Then he sat me down on the bench and put it on my foot – it fit me perfectly. I was over the moon thinking about having a glass slipper just like Cinderella and couldn’t believe how amazing the anniversary gift was. When I stood up smiling, Chris stayed down on one knee and I saw his brother flip over the pillow to reveal a ring box he’d been holding the whole time. “In January 2012, I was attacked and stabbed 32 times by an abusive ex-boyfriend I met in high school. I flat-lined 4 times in the ER, received 12 units of blood, and suffered a stroke in my cerebellum. I also had a fractured skull and nose, lost two teeth, had right facial paralysis and a stabbed larynx, and was severely beaten. It’s a miracle I survived and it’s a miracle I’m alive today. Because of that, I decided to dedicate my life to speaking out about domestic violence and ended up giving my first keynote speech about a year later. During it, I was surprised by the team of EMTs that rescued me that night – one of them was named Cameron. He was the one who set up the helicopter landing and carried me into it. He was the one who saved my life. After my speech, Cameron invited my mom and I to dinner at the fire house so I could spend time with him and the rest of my heroes. “We were on a trip to Europe together and were spending a few days in Paris. Sandy told me one of his friends from back home lived in Paris and that he wanted us to get coffee with him. So one afternoon, we followed the directions Sandy’s “friend” gave us to get to the shop. The directions led us over a bridge that had a breath-taking view of the Eiffel Tower and when we got to the middle of the bridge, Sandy just stopped. I was confused and also realized we were standing in the way of some woman’s picture. But then, he grabbed my hands, turned me towards him and said, “this is it”. He started saying all these crazy things about us and our life together and before I knew it, he was on one knee and we were engaged in the most beautiful city ever…” Photo by @theparisphotographer
