Alexandra Kutas, una morena de 23 años en silla de ruedas desde su nacimiento, desfiló en la reciente Fashion Week de Kiev. Un sueño cumplido y sobre todo una victoria para los minusválidos de Ucrania.





En un trono de madera portado por cuatro hombres, Kutas, con un vestido negro largo, saludó al público. Fue la primera modelo con una minusvalía en desfilar en el país en un evento de este calibre.

“Quería desfilar para demostrar que una chica en silla de ruedas puede ser vista como una profesional de primera categoría”, explica a la AFP.

La joven de cabello largo siempre soñó con ser modelo. Durante años envió cartas a las agencias, que rechazaron educadamente su candidatura.

“Me dijeron que era muy guapa pero que no sabían cómo podrían representarme porque el mercado todavía no era maduro para eso”.

Kutas está en silla de ruedas desde su nacimiento por una lesión en la médula espinal provocada por un error médico.

Estudió en una escuela normal. Como el centro no tenía escaleras mecánicas ni rampas, su padre y su abuelo la subían.

“Sí, fue difícil, en nuestro país todo es más difícil para una persona con movilidad física limitada”, denuncia. “Todo el mundo lo sabe”.

– “Una gran inspiración” –

En 2012 estaba almorzando cuando un fotógrafo se acercó a ella y le preguntó si quería ser modelo. Ella aceptó y la experiencia le gustó. Pero tenía “la impresión de que no había modelos con minusvalías” y perdió autoestima.

Un día vio un desfile del británico Alexander McQueen, quien en 1999 eligió como modelo a Aimee Mullins, una atleta paralímpica amputada de las dos piernas.

“Fue una gran motivación, una gran inspiración para mí. Me pregunté por qué si fue posible en 1999 no podría serlo hoy para una chica en silla de ruedas”, declara.

Más tarde, al enterarse de que un grupo de jóvenes diseñadores italianos, FTL MODA, invitó a modelos con discapacidades a participar en la Fashion Week de Nueva York, entendió que el mundo estaba preparado para un cambio.

El diseñador ucraniano Fiodor Vozianov formaba parte de los escépticos. No se imaginaba que el universo de la moda en su país estuviera un día preparado para aceptar modelos alejadas de los cánones de belleza típicos.

Pero cuando conoció a Alexandra Kutas quedó prendado por la confianza que desprendía la joven y decidió darle una oportunidad. “Las personas no son todas iguales, somos distintos” y “sería extraño prohibir en los podios a una parte de nuestro mundo”.

Ahora Alexandra Kutas es una modelo en alza en Ucrania, un país donde los minusválidos estuvieron mucho tiempo discriminados y, durante la época soviética, llegaron a tener que vivir ocultos.

La joven también es consejera del alcalde de su ciudad natal, Dnipro, cerca de la zona rebelde prorrusa del este de Ucrania.

Su tarea consiste en facilitar las condiciones de vida a los discapacitados, algo esencial por la guerra entre los rebeldes y el ejército ucraniano, que causó más de 10.000 muertos y 23.000 heridos, muchos de ellos amputados.
