Melania e Ivanka Trump dan que hablar en EEUU al evitar el velo en A.Saudí

La primera dama de EEUU, Melania Trump, y la hija mayor del presidente Donald Trump, Ivanka, están dando hoy que hablar en su país al evitar portar el velo en Arabia Saudí, pese a que el mandatario criticó ese gesto en 2015.

Melania e Ivanka Trump acompañan a Trump en su primera gira internacional como presidente estadounidense, que empezó este sábado en Riad, primera escala de un viaje que le llevará también a Israel, el Vaticano y las cumbres de la OTAN (Bruselas) y el G7 (Sicilia).

La primera dama y la hija del gobernante republicano se dejaron ver este sábado en varios actos oficiales en la capital saudí con la cabeza descubierta, si bien lucieron sobrios vestidos largos de tonalidad oscura.

Según el estricto código de vestuario del reino, las mujeres saudíes deber vestir en público la “abaya”, que es una túnica larga y ancha; y muchas ocultan también su pelo con el “hiyab”, el pañuelo islámico.

Sin embargo, resulta normal que mujeres que visitan el país árabe como parte de delegaciones internacionales no se cubran el cabello.

Así lo hicieron, por ejemplo, la primera ministra británica, Theresa May, o la canciller alemana, Angela Merkel, durante sus respectivas visitas este año a Arabia Saudí.

No obstante, el gesto de Melania e Ivanka Trump ha llamado la atención en Estados Unidos porque Trump criticó en 2015 a la entonces primera dama del país, Michelle Obama, por no portar el velo en una vista al reino.

“Mucha gente está diciendo que es maravilloso que la señora Obama rechazara vestir el velo en Arabia Saudí, pero ellos fueron insultados. Tenemos suficientes enemigos”, escribió el multimillonario en su cuenta de Twitter, su red social favorita.

Por contra, algunos políticos de su partido, como el senador Ted Cruz, aplaudieron entonces a Michelle Obama por “alzarse en defensa de las mujeres en el mundo”.

Preguntada la Casa Blanca sobre por qué Melania e Ivanka Trump optaron por llevar el pelo descubierto, la residencia presidencial contestó que no hubo ningún requerimiento para lucir el velo, informó la cadena CNN.

En su primer día en Riad, Trump fue agasajado por el rey saudí, Salman bin Abdulaziz, quien le brindó una cálida bienvenida.

Estados Unidos y Arabia Saudí firmaron este sábado una serie de acuerdos en diversos campos por un valor de 380.000 millones de dólares para los próximos diez años.

La atención se centra hoy en el discurso que el presidente norteamericano pronunciará en Riad sobre el islam ante dirigentes musulmanes, a los que instará a la lucha contra el extremismo islamista.
