El huracán Irma se ha cobrado ya las tres primeras víctimas mortales en Florida, estado que recibió esta madrugada el impacto del ojo del ciclón en los Cayos, el extremo sur de EEUU, informaron hoy medios locales.





Un hombre murió ayer después de que la camioneta que conducía sufriera un accidente en el condado de Monroe, donde se encuentran los Cayos, después de perder el control del vehículo debido supuestamente a un golpe de viento.

Autoridades locales informaron de que la camioneta trasladaba un generador cuando se salió ayer por la tarde de la carretera y chocó de manera lateral contra un árbol en una zona donde azota con fuerza Irma, que mantiene vientos máximos sostenidos de 215 kilómetros por hora, con rachas superiores.

El alguacil del condado de Monroe, Rick Ramsay, dijo, en un comunicado, que tuvieron que esperar a que amainaran un poco los vientos para poder recuperar el cadáver.

“No queríamos dejar el cuerpo de este hombre ahí fuera y lo hicimos cuando vimos una calma en la tormenta que nos permitía salir y recuperarlo de manera segura”, dijo Ramsay.

Según medios locales, otras dos personas murieron esta mañana en un accidente en el condado de Hardee, en el interior de Florida, debido a las fuertes lluvias que provoca el huracán.

La Patrulla de Carreteras de Florida indicó que se trató de un choque frontal cuando las condiciones meteorológicas comenzaban a deteriorarse debido al huracán, aunque todavía hay que investigar lo sucedido.

Por este motivo, la agencia estatal insistió en la necesidad de que las personas eviten conducir bajo estas condiciones a menos que sea estrictamente necesario.

Hasta la llegada a EEUU esta madrugada, Irma había dejado al menos 25 muertos y cuantiosos daños materiales a su paso por el Caribe.

La trayectoria prevista de Irma apunta a que, tras dejar atrás los Cayos de Florida, pasara cerca o penetrará por la costa oeste de Florida, y podría anegar ciudad como Naples, Sarasota, Fort Myers o Tampa.

En su último boletín, emitido a las 09.00 hora local (13.00 GMT), el NHC indicó que el centro del ojo del huracán está sobre los Cayos y está situado a 30 kilómetros al este de Cayo Hueso, el extremo sur del país, y se mueve en dirección nornoroeste a 13 kilómetros por hora.

Las autoridades de Florida y el presidente de EE.UU., Donald Trump, han alertado a la población de la necesidad de buscar refugio y abandonar las zonas de evacuación obligatoria.

El gobernador estatal, Rick Scott, emitió una orden de evacuación obligatoria de 6,3 millones de personas. EFE
