La cifra de fallecidos en el tiroteo ocurrido la pasada noche en Las Vegas ascendió a 59, mientras que ya son 527 los heridos, informaron las autoridades en el más reciente parte oficial.

En una rueda de prensa, el alguacil del condado de Las Vegas, Joe Lombardo, detalló la nueva cifra de víctimas y añadió además que el autor no solamente tenía otras 18 armas en su poder, sino también explosivos y otros dispositivos que están siendo analizados.

El presunto autor de la masacre, Stephen Paddock, de 64 años, disparó desde su habitación del hotel Mandalay Bay de Las Vegas contra los miles de asistentes de un concierto de música country con armas automáticas y después se quitó la vida.

Más temprano

El portavoz de la Policía de Las Vegas, Joe Lombardo, ofreció estos datos en una rueda de prensa en la que pidió paciencia a los familiares porque la identificación de las víctimas llevará tiempo.

Asimismo, advirtió de que las cifras son provisionales porque, como ha ido ocurriendo en las últimas horas, se teme que continúen en aumento.

Entre los muertos hay un agente de la Policía de Las Vegas que estaba fuera de servicio, mientras que dos oficiales que sí estaban trabajando resultaron heridos.

Stephen Paddock, un hombre blanco de 64 años, abrió fuego desde su habitación del piso 32 del hotel Mandala Bay de Las Vegas a las 22.08 del domingo hora local (05.08 GMT del lunes) contra una multitud de más de 22.000 personas que asistían en la calle a un concierto de un festival country.

Lombardo dejó que fuera un portavoz del FBI el que diera los detalles de la investigación y explicara que se descarta cualquier vínculo del tirador con algún grupo terrorista extranjero.

Horas antes, el grupo yihadista Estado Islámico (EI) se había atribuido la matanza al asegurar a través de su agencia de propaganda afín al EI, Amaq, que el autor del atentado es “un soldado del Estado Islámico”.

Lombardo explicó que las autoridades no tenían información previa sobre el sospechoso, por lo que respondió a los periodistas: “no sé cómo esto podría haberse prevenido”.

Una de las revelaciones de su comparecencia fue que el atacante rompió las ventanas del hotel con una herramienta similar a un martillo antes de disparar indiscriminadamente contra la multitud, que asistía a un concierto al aire libre en la calle.

La Policía ha concluido que Paddock introdujo él solo, sin colaboradores, las 10 armas que se encontraron en su habitación del hotel, donde se alojaba desde el 28 de septiembre.

Lombardo confirmó que han hablado con la novia del atacante, Marilou Danley, de 62 años, que se encuentra en estos momentos fuera del país.

Aunque se sigue considerando que ella es una “persona de interés” en este suceso, los agentes creen que no tuvo nada que ver con la masacre.

En la rueda de prensa compareció también la alcaldesa de Las Vegas, la demócrata Carolyn Goodman, quien dijo que el tiroteo es obra de un “lunático loco lleno de odio” y pidió a la población que acuda a los bancos de donación de sangre porque “ahora mismo es lo más necesario”.

Por su parte, el gobernador de Nevada, el republicano Brian Sandoval, condenó el tiroteo como un “acto cobarde y despreciable”.

“Vamos a tener que aprender de esto”, agregó Sandoval, sin mencionar el control de armas que su partido obstaculiza en el Congreso.

Los agentes estudian ahora los objetos recogidos tanto en la habitación del hotel del atacante como en su casa de Mesquite, a una hora de Las Vegas, donde también se encontraron armas de fuego.

Además, el FBI registrará ahora otra propiedad del atacante en el norte del estado. EFE
