Países nórdicos

En Suecia, los festejos navideños se adelantan unos días. Las niñas son las grandes protagonistas: el 13 de diciembre se celebra la Noche de Santa Lucía, en la que pueblos, escuelas y familias escogen a una de ellas, que visten con una túnica blanca y una corona de candelas.

Las chicas, en honor a Santa Lucía, participan en una procesión festiva en la que se cantan villancicos populares.

En Finlandia, también celebran la Nochebuena en familia e intercambian regalos, con la diferencia de que el día 25 pasan una jornada de paz y tranquilidad y el 26 celebran las fiestas con los amigos.

Los países escandinavos son el hogar de Papá Noel y, por ello, se le puede visitar todo el año en su taller de regalos en Rovaniemi, en la región de Laponia en el círculo polar Ártico. Después de la cena, los niños finlandeses esperan ansiosos la llegada de Papá Noel al que llaman Joulupukki.

Alemania

San Nicolás

Los niños germanos esperan con ilusión la llegada de San Nicolás el día 6 de diciembre. La noche anterior, dejan sus zapatos o botitas delante de la puerta de casa.

Si han sido bondadosos, San Nicolás los llenará de chocolate, dulces y otras sorpresas. Si, por el contrario, han hecho muchas travesuras, el Krampus –entre un demonio y un sátiro- les dejará ramas secas, aunque los niños alemanes ponen mucho empeño para que esto no pase. El día 24, muchas casas también reciben la visita de Der Weihnachtsmann (Papá Noel), que llega con más regalos.

En algunas partes de Alemania, Austria y Suiza, los niños no esperan a Papá Noel sino a Christkind, el mensajero del Niño Jesús. La gran mayoría de veces suele ser una chica joven, muy elegante vestida de ángel, y les deja algún pequeño presente al sonido de una campanilla.

Rusia

La misma viejecilla que llega a Italia también visita las casas rusas, donde recibe el nombre de Babouschka (abuela, en su idioma). Sin embargo, la Navidad no se celebra el 25 de diciembre, sino trece días después, el 7 de enero, la fecha del nacimiento de Jesús según el calendario que sigue la iglesia ortodoxa, la religión del país.

Ese día, los niños comen un menú compuesto por doce platos y disfrutan como nunca de la sopa de remolacha. En lugar de Papá Noel, los niños rusos también dan la bienvenida a Ded Moroz (el Abuelo del Hielo), que llega el día de Año Nuevo con los regalos.

Japón

A diferencia de muchos países, la Nochebuena en Japón no se pasa en familia, sino que el día 24 de diciembre es oficialmente el día de los enamorados y se celebra en pareja. Es el día de Año Nuevo cuando los niños reciben los regalos. La tradición dicta que la primera comida del año asegura buena suerte.

Befana Italia

Cuenta la leyenda popular, que los tres Reyes Magos, en su camino al portal de Belén, se desorientaron y preguntaron a una viejecilla cómo seguir hasta llegar al niño Jesús. La señora no atinó con sus señas y, desafortunadamente, sus majestades de Oriente se perdieron.

Los Reyes llegaron unos días más tarde a su destino, algo que lamentó muchísimo la viejecilla. Por eso, cada 5 de enero, la Befana llega con una escoba a las casas italianas, con regalos para ofrecer al Niño Jesús si por casualidad lo encuentra en algún hogar y, de paso, dejarlo todo bien limpio.

En Italia, en Nochebuena se celebra a lo grande la Vigilia di Natale con un cenone (la gran cena) a base de pescado y, de postre, un surtido de dulces, en el que el rey es el exquisito panettone.

Australia

Mientras que, durante las Navidades, en el hemisferio norte reina el frío, en el sur las fiestas se celebran en pleno verano, además, en el caso de Australia, coincidiendo con el comienzo de las vacaciones escolares. Las familias australianas suelen celebrar el día de Navidad fuera de casa, comiendo algo fresco en la playa.

El 25 de diciembre, más de 40.000 personas se reúnen en Bondi Beach, en Sídney, y al caer la noche presencian el espectáculo de fuegos artificiales en el Puente del Puerto.

En esta parte del mundo, el trineo de Papá Noel no lo conducen renos sino seis canguros blancos (los Six White Boomers). Algunas casas también reciben la visita de un Papá Noel alternativo llamado Swag Man, un hombre con camiseta y sombrero que reparte los regalos con un atuendo más adaptado a las altas temperaturas.

Brasil

Las playas de Ipanema y Copacabana resplandecen durante la Nochebuena con fuegos artificiales. También en Brasil, Papai Noel reparte los regalos en pleno verano y, por ello, viste ropa más ligera de seda. Visita a los niños cariocas tras la cena, a la que llaman Ceia de Natal, y en la que la familia se reúne para comer pavo.

México

Durante los nueve días anteriores a Navidad, los mexicanos celebran Las Posadas, de origen religioso y de carácter muy solemne para las familias, que acaban con una piñata, algo que supone gran diversión para los niños y niñas.

A ciegas, los niños golpean la piñata para romperla y hacer caer la fruta y los dulces navideños que hay en su interior. Los mayores reciben el aguinaldo: nueces, piñones, cacahuetes y galletas. La fiesta y la música siguen sin cesar durante toda la Nochebuena.

España y Portugal

Para los niños andaluces, la víspera del 25 de diciembre, es una gran fiesta. En Nochebuena, la familia se reúne alrededor de la mesa con manjares, y los más pequeños cantan villancicos con padres, abuelos y primos, mientras se divierten tocando la zambomba.

En el País Vasco, se espera con expectación al Olentzero, un simpático carbonero que lleva regalos a los chavales del lugar. También es muy esperado el Apalpador, otro carbonero barbudo que vive en las montañas del este de Galicia y que palpa las barrigas de los pequeños gallegos, para comprobar si han comido bien y dejarles castañas y algún regalito; así como el Pai Natal, que el día de Navidad baja por la chimenea de los hogares de los portugueses.
