Tras los recientes atentados que ha sufrido Nueva York por parte del Estado Islámico, la ciudad estadounidense reforzará su seguridad policial en la tradicional celebración Times Square por Año Nuevo.
“Estamos listos para tener una gran celebración. No hay amenazas creíbles contra la ciudad o Times Square, pero estamos vigilantes”, dijo el alcalde de Nueva York, Bill de Blasio, en una conferencia de prensa.
Según informó el funcionario, las calles permanecerán cerradas antes del mediodía con camiones llenos de arena y vallas de cemento alrededor del sector turístico de Times Square, donde se espera que asistan unos dos millones de visitantes para despedir el 2017.
Los que acudan al famoso evento que se celebra en Nueva York desde 1904, no podrán llevar mochilas, bolsas grandes, paraguas ni bebidas alcohólicas.
El aumento en la seguridad se produce después de dos ataques recientes en la ciudad, ambos inspirados por el grupo extremista Estado Islámico: uno con una bomba casera en un túnel del metro el 11 de diciembre, y un atropello masivo con un camión en TriBeca que dejó ocho muertos el 31 de octubre.
