The snake bit the infant, a member of the indigenous ethnic group, last Thursday, July 21st, when he was walking through his community. He died because he did not receive timely medical attention or adequate treatment.

Those were days of tension and fear for this indigenous community, located in “Machiques de Perijá”, as they did not have the resources to transfer the minor to an urban area.

It was not until Saturday, July 23rd, that he was able to reach the Tukuko community outpatient clinic, a healthcare center that, according to statistics, serves 13,000 people annually. There they did not have the antivenom serum, essential for this type of eventuality that compromises the life of a victim.

The minor was transferred to a hospital in Machiques, where there was no serum either. He was sent to Maracaibo, but the “Petróleos de Venezuela” (PDVSA) ambulances did not have fuel to take him to the city.

A group of young people started collecting money to buy gasoline and take the infant to Maracaibo. They achieved their goal, but despite this, the child died at the Chiquinquirá Hospital in Maracaibo.

It is worth remembering that one of the people who fought the hardest to obtain the antivenom serum was Fray Nelson Sandoval, who died on June 11th as a result of Covid-19.

In Venezuela there are no updated official figures on deaths from snake bites, but these types of incidents frequently occur in the Sierra de Perijá, a rural area within a dense tropical jungle where indigenous families live.
